GROVE'S SERMONS & TRACTS
London: John Wilson and James Hodges, 1741.
6 vols., 8vo (7½" tall). Full calf. Pleasing
eighteenth century set with gilt raised bands, panels
with a pretty bird in a branch motif, twin labels and
speckled edges. Somewhat rubbed.
First edition in a contemporary binding of the
controversial teachings of dissenting tutor Henry
Grove. "Grove sought distinction as an ethical writer,
but the impression of his personal character has
outlasted his painstaking theory of morals. His system
is a mild Christian stoicism; the function of
morality is to meet the universal demand for
happiness; and it was Grove's experience that the
happiness of the present state consists more in repose
than in pleasure." (DNB)
