Full crushed morocco, 10.5 inches tall. Translated from the French and illustrated by Charles Ricketts. The binding is also by Charles Ricketts with CR tooled at the foot of both boards. The binding consists of geometric and floral tooling to both boards and gilt bands and titles to the spine. Top edge gilt. With the armorial bookplate of Vaux of Harrowden. 5 full page illustrations. An identical binding can be found at the British Library Fine Binding Collection.
Charles de Sousy Ricketts was an English artist, illustrator, author and printer, and is best known for his work as book designer and typographer from 1896 to 1904 with the Vale Press, and his work in the theatre as a set and costume designer.
