[Chambers' Encyclopaedia.]
Chambers' Encyclopaedia, a dictionary of universal
knowledge for the people. Illustrated with maps and
numerous wood engravings. Revised edition.
CHAMBERS' ENCYCLOPAEDIA
London & Edinburgh: W. & R. Chambers, 1884.
10 vols., 4to (10" tall). Half calf. Gilt raised
bands, fine panels, twin red and green labels and
armorial bookplate.
A beautifully bound set. Chambers' Encyclopaedia was
based on the celebrated German Conversations-Lexicon,
although with a far greater emphasis on British
history and biography, as well as use of illustrative
engravings and maps. This edition included revised and
updated articles, which the publishers felt necessary
following the completion of the first edition in 1868.
