Ainsworth, W. Harrison.
[The Works of William Ainsworth]. Complete in 16 Volumes.
AINSWORTH'S COLLECTED WORKS
London: George Routledge and Sons, [c.1885].
16 vols., 8vo (9 x 6 inches). Half crushed morocco with wide raised bands, gilt lettering and centre tools. Cloth boards, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated with engravings, portrait frontispiece. Some foxing to the prelims. Internally clean with wide margins.
A very handsome set. A fashionable and good-looking young man, Ainsworth was propelled to the heart of literary London following the instant success of his novel Rookwood (1831), which featured legendary highwayman Dick Turpin. This was soon followed by a string of best-selling novels including Jack Sheppard, Guy Fawkes. The Tower of London, and Old Saint Paul's. Ainsworth's popularity gradually waned as his style of historical novel went out of fashion, but he is still remembered for his vivid narrative style and excellent attention to historical detail.
