STIRLING-MAXWELL, Sir William.
Don John of Austria or Passages from the History of the Sixteenth Century 1547-1578. Illustrated with numerous wood engravings. In two vols.
STIRLING-MAXWELL'S DON JOHN OF AUSTRIA
London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1883.
2 vols., large 8vo (10 x 7 inches). Half crushed brown morocco, by RIVIERE & SON. Raised bands, gilt crown centre tool and gilt lettering to panels. Top edges gilt. Marbled boards and endpapers.
A very handsome set, attractively illustrated throughout with numerous woodcut plates, vignettes and historiated initials. Celebrated historian, art historian, and book collector, Stirling Maxwell's "Don John of Austria (1883) was finally published posthumously and was a scholarly yet very readable history. Most of the work for the book had been completed by 1859, and in 1864 a single-volume edition of ten copies was printed. The delays reflected Stirling's perfectionism as both historian and book designer." (DNB).
