MOORE, Thomas.
MOORE'S LALLA ROOKH
MOORE, Thomas.
Lalla Rookh, an Oriental Romance. Nineteenth edition. Illustrated with engravings from drawings by eminent artists under the superintendence of Mr. Charles Heath.
London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1838.
8vo (9½" tall). Full crushed red morocco. Superb early Victorian binding with wide gilt raised bands and fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards. Gilt dentelles and all edges. Boards slightly marked.
Finely engraved, full-page plates, after Edward Corbauld, T.P. Stephanoff and K. Meadows. "Lalla Rookh was published in 1817, and at once gained a success rivalling Scott and Byron. Moore's fame speedily became European; perhaps no English poem of that age has been so frequently translated? Its most remarkable characteristic is perhaps the poet's extreme dexterity in cloaking Irish patriotic aspirations under the garb of oriental romance." (DNB).
