William Cowper (1731?1800) was of one the most popular
poets of his day,
with highlights including the ballad John Gilpin and
his highly successful poem about rural ease, The Task.
Although perhaps less known today, his work remains
important for its far-reaching influence on the
development of a more natural style in English poetry.
