DE LOLME'S CONSTITUTION OF ENGLAND
London: J. Wilkie & J. Robinson, et al?, 1810.
8vo (8.5" tall). Superb full pink Russia calf, with twin gilt raised bands, gilt and blind tooling to panels. Blind floral roll edged with double and single gilt rules framing both boards. Gilt dentelles. Marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. Armorial bookplate. Prelims slightly spotted. An exceptional copy.
A very handsome Regency binding. De Lolme's important study of the English constitution was first published in French in 1772 and following its translation into English, was reprinted frequently throughout the nineteenth century. "?The essay contains many shrewd observations on political affairs. As an enthusiastic statement of the theory that the freedom of the English constitution is the result of the balance of the different parts, the 'equilibrium between the ruling powers of the state', it still deserves study.'
