FARMER, John S.
Merry Songs and Ballads. Prior to the Year A.D. 1800.
PRIVATE PRINTING OF FARMER'S SONGS & BALLADS
Privately Printed for Subscribers Only, 1897.
5 vols., wide 8vo (8.75 x 7 inches). Half crushed blue
morocco with raised bands, gilt lettering and fillet to
panels. Cloth boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed.
Very large margins. A very elegant set.
First enlarged edition. Merry Songs and Ballads was
privately printed due to the sexually explicit and
bawdy content. John Farmer notoriously wrote a number
of such titles during the late nineteenth-century
(aptly described as "scholarly boilerpots"), the best
known of which was this collection of risque songs and
ballads, in addition to his popular 'Slang and Its
Analogues' and Musa Pedestris', a collection of slang
songs.
