CHALMERS' BRITISH ESSAYISTS IN SUPERB FULL CALF
London: C. and J. Rivington, G. and W. Nicol, et al..., 1823.
38 vols., 12mo (6.25 x 4.25 inches). Full calf, with
twin black labels, gilt bands, cornertools framing
small floral device, blind Etruscan roll framing both
boards, marbled edges and endpapers. Frontispiece
portraits to some volumes. Small bookplates. Half a
dozen volumes with slight darkening to the very tail of
spine and/or lower edge of boards, small mark to spine
of volume 37. Overall a really lovely set of this
important work.
A superb set of Chalmers' classic collection of
writings by greatest eighteenth-century essayists. The
essays span the period from 1709 to 1803 and are
selected from the leading periodicals of the day,
including The Tatler, The Spectator, The Observer, The
Guardian and The Rambler. Exploring all manner of
topics, from religion and matters of state, to love and
envy, the essays encompass some of the finest writing
of the day by contributors including Steele, Swift,
Addison, Pope, Johnson and Moore. "In The British
Essayists Chalmers, who selected the periodicals for
inclusion and wrote introductory prefaces for each, not
only preserved many periodicals that might otherwise
have been lost, but provided valuable analyses in the
prefaces." (DNB).
