A superb set of Hume and Smollett's celebrated history.
Hume's History of England was the first comprehensive
historical account of the events that shaped the
institutions and structure of the state and remains one
of the great classic historical texts. Smollett's text
was published soon after Hume's and was an instant
best-seller. "The success of Smollett's History may be
explained by reference to his statement of intent in
his prefatory 'Plan': his approach is factual, not
theoretical or philosophical; he will eschew conjecture
and national, religious, and political partiality; he
will consult only the most legitimate of sources; and
his style will make his material accessible." (DNB).
