Parisian bookseller's ticket. An exceptional set.
A fabulous embossed binding, a style that is very
rarely found in an entire set. A collection of Lytton
Bulwer's works published by Baudry, the most famous
overseas publisher of English langugage titles of the day.
The collection includes many of Lytton Bulwer's best
known works, such as his first successful novel Pelham;
The Last Days of Pompeii, which instantly achieved
classic status and remained a bestseller throughout the
nineteenth century; his hugely popular historical novel
Rienzi, Last of the Tribunes; and England and the
English, his most original work of non-fiction.
"Very few of Bulwer's contemporaries were as prolific,
and none was as successful in so many genres. During
his lifetime he was outsold only by Dickens, and only
Dickens was more widely translated... Bulwer's great
gift was to anticipate and define contemporary taste.
With his ornately rhetorical style and lofty moralizing
manner he was pre-eminently a writer for his own
time..." (DNB).
