Poetical Works.
A TREMENDOUS 90 VOLUME WORKS OF SCOTT
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1869-1880.

pretty twin brown and tan labels, gilt raised bands,
gilt fishtail tooling alternating with thistle and
floral design to panels, marbled boards, edges and
endpapers. Armorial bookplates. Waverley novels
illustrated throughout, including frontispieces and
engraved half-titles. No damage to headcaps, labels all
present, no cracking to joints or weakening of hinges,
but some rubbing to edges and occasional spotting. An
excellent set.
A stunning set, complete and remarkable in scale,
comprising a complete set of Waverley Novels in 48
volumes, complete prose work in 30 volumes and complete
poetical works in 12 volumes, uniformly bound.
One of the most popular authors of his day, Scott is
considered to have perfected the format of the
historical novel with his hugely influential Waverley
novels. "At one blow Scott had established a new
literary form; and the basic principles on which
Waverley and all his subsequent novels were constructed
have been disregarded only at the peril of artistic
failure." (PMM)
