Thackeray's reputation as one of the great Victorian
writers was firmly established with the publication of
Vanity Fair (1847-48). The amoral adventures of
anti-hero Becky Sharp brought Thackeray immediate fame
and wealth, and in his own time he was regarded as the
only possible rival to Dickens.
