GIBBON, Edward.
The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman
Empire. With notes by Dean Milman and M. Guizot... In
eight volumes. With portrait and maps.
GIBBON'S DECLINE & FALL
London: John Murray, 1854.
8 vols., 8vo (9 x 6 inches). Full calf, with twin red
and brown labels, gilt raised bands, floral gilt
panels, dentelles and top edges gilt, marbled
endpapers. Illustrated with frontispiece portrait and
maps (some folding). Little darkened on spine. A very
good set.
A handsome set of Gibbon's classic historical study,
which was first published in the 1780s. Widely regarded
as his most important work, it is known principally for
the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary
sources, and its open denigration of organised
religion, though the extent of this is disputed by some
critics. Adam Smith congratulated Gibbon on completion
the work: "by the universal assent of every man of
taste and learning ? it sets you at the very head of
the whole literary tribe at present existing in Europe".
