century literary figure and famously established the
letter form (epistolary technique) as a new literary
style in his celebrated novels, Pamela and Clarissa.
Pamela is also often credited as being the first
English novel. The History of Sir Charles Grandison
was another of his most important and popular works;
it was said to have greatly influenced Jane Austen,
who wrote that she remembered "every circumstance" in
the novel, everything "that was ever said or done".
