MORE, Hannah.
Practical Piety; or, the influence of the religion of
the heart on the conduct of the life. The tenth
edition. In two volumes.
STUNNING SET OF MORE'S PRACTICAL PIETY
London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1814.
2 vols., 12mo (8 x 5 inches). Superb full diced Russia
calf, gilt Etruscan scroll bands with oval centretools,
single gilt rule framing diced boards, gilt dentelles,
marbled edges and endpapers. Armorial bookplates.
Little foxed. Slightly sunned at spine. A stunning set.
A very pretty Regency binding. First published 1811,
the popularity of More's Practical Piety is evidenced
by frequency of its republication and it had reached
its twelfth edition within just ten years. Its message
of Christian values was aimed at the middle and upper
classes and although a common theme at the time, More's
light touch ensured its immediate success. More was one
of the original 'Blue stockings', ladies of literary
persuasion in eighteenth century London who strove to
promote intellectual discourse in preference to
card-playing and other more frivolous female pursuits.
