Gilt doublures with floral patterned endpapers. Top edge gilt. Slightly foxed. Armorial bookplate. Original issues of Bentley's Magazine. Bound with special title page and a preface dated 1889 by the collector John Waugh. Autograph letter and envelope from Smith, 5 November 1841, 2½ pages, bound in.
A magnificent deluxe binding by TOUT binders, with an autograph letter by the author. Smith's letter is to Miss Peacock about the loan of books and mentions Dion Boucicault's new comedy. Extensively illustrated with fine engraved plates after John Leech. Albert Smith was a notable nineteenth century writer and an early contributor to both Punch and Bentley's Miscellany; this title is considered his finest novel.
