BENGER, Miss.
Memoirs of The Life of Mary Queen of Scots.
VERY EXCEPTIONAL BINDINGS.
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, And Brown, 1823.
2 volume set. 8 inches tall. Remarkable full calf bindings. Three wide gilt and stained raised bands and labels. Very distinctive gilt tooling, diced, sunburst and pair of swans drinking from cup. Fine gilt roll framing the boards, unusual black roll running up the joints, wide squares with fine gilt dentelles. And most amazing of all, gold strips bound into the hinges. Armorial bookplates. The finisher was evidently not from these shores or had imbibed too much of the binder's allowance of ale as he failed to spell Queen correctly on both labels.
