COLLINS, Arthur.
The Peerage of England; Containing a Genealogical and
Historical Account of all the Peers of that Kingdom...
In Eight Volumes. The Fifth Edition.
COLLINS' PEERAGE OF ENGLAND
London: W. Strahan, J. F. and C. Rivington, 1779.
8 vols., 8vo (8.75 x 5.25 inches). Full calf with twin
red and green labels. Raised bands, gilt centre tools
to the panels. Blind outer edges. Illustrated with
engraved vignettes. Large margins. Expert repairs to a
couple of volumes, but a magnificent set of this
important genealogical reference work.
A very handsome eighteenth century set, illustrated
with superb copper-plate engravings of coats of arms,
crests, supporters and mottoes. An important precursor
to Debrett's Peerage, Collins' Peerage met with
immediate success when it was first anonymously
published in one volume in 1709 and went on to be
published in increasingly comprehensive and
well-illustrated editions throughout the eighteenth
century.
