CARLYLE, Thomas.
Thomas Carlyle's Collected Works. Library edition.
COLLECTED WORKS, LIBRARY EDITION
London: Chapman and Hall, [c.1870].
34 vols., 8vo (9.5 x 6.5 inches). Contemporary half
calf, with twin tan and black labels, gilt raised
bands, detailed gilt tooling to panels, marbled boards,

Bookplate. A fine set.
A very attractive set, complete with three additional
volumes of Carlyle's translations from the German and
one further index volume. Carlyle's Collected Works
confirmed his reputation as one of the great writers of
the period. George Eliot wrote that "it is not as a
theorist, but as a great and beautiful human nature,
that Carlyle influences us", and influential critic
James Martineau cited Carlyle, along with Coleridge and
John Henry Newman, as one of the three major influences
on the religious spirit of the age.
