12 vols., 8vo (8.75 x 5.5 inches). Full diced Russia calf with gilt lettering on spine and double gilt fillets. Gilt fillet framing boards. Dentelles, yellow edges and marbled boards. Double armorial bookplates and ownership inscription. Engraved frontispiece and folded map. A little foxing to the prelims.
A very elegant set of Edward Gibbon's most important work which was known principally for the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary sources, and its open denigration of organised religion, though the extent of this is disputed by some critics.
