Arnold's History of Rome was "written in
a clear and vigorous style and enlivened by his
personal topographical knowledge, his account of the
early period, particularly, was influenced by Niebuhr's
critical methodology. Arnold's aim was a history that
'by its high morals and its general tone [would] be of
use to the cause' (that is, Christianity) (Stanley,
162). (DNB).
Arnold was the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School,
where his zealous educational reforms transformed the
school and had a massive influence on the development
of the British public school system. In addition to his
prominent academic career, Arnold published a number of
acclaimed historical works, the best known of which is
History of Rome, and his son Matthew Arnold was a major
poet of the Victorian era.
