3 vols., 8vo (8.75 x 5.75 inches). Full calf by RIVIERE, with twin purple and terracotta labels. Gilt raised bands with very decorative floral tooling to panels. Gilt rules framing boards. Dentelles, marbled edges and endpapers. Neat ownership inscription. Prelims a little foxed. A superb set.
Arnold's History of Rome was "written in a clear and vigorous style and enlivened by his personal topographical knowledge, his account of the early period, particularly, was influenced by Niebuhr's critical methodology. Arnold's aim was a history that 'by its high morals and its general tone [would] be of use to the cause' (that is, Christianity) (Stanley, 162). (DNB).
Arnold was the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School, where his zealous educational reforms transformed the school and had a massive influence on the development of the British public school system. In addition to his prominent academic career, Arnold published a number of acclaimed historical works, the best known of which is History of Rome, and his son Matthew Arnold was a major poet of the Victorian era.
