26 vols., 8vo (9 x 6.5 inches). Half crushed red
morocco with gilt raised bands and very delicate floral
centre tools to panels. Marbled boards and endpapers,
top edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with
photogravure plates, including frontispieces. A very
handsome set.
LIMITED EDITION, one of 1000 numbered copies of the
Centennial Memorial Edition. Titles within the set
include Friedrich II of Prussia, Essays and The French
Revolution. Carlyle's Collected Works (1857-8)
confirmed his reputation as one of the great writers of
the period. George Eliot wrote that "it is not as a
theorist, but as a great and beautiful human nature,
that Carlyle influences us", and influential critic
James Martineau cited Carlyle, along with Coleridge and
John Henry Newman, as one of the three major influences
on the religious spirit of the age.
