2 vols., 8vo (8.75 x 5.75 inches). Full vellum with twin red and brown labels. Gilt bands with fine floral tooling to panels. Double gilt rule framing armorial centre tool on both boards. All edges red, marbled endpapers. Neat ownership inscription dated 1879 to first blank of volume one.
A very handsome set, presented in immaculate condition. Butler's Fifteen Sermons (1726) "is widely accepted as one of the most significant ethical writings of the eighteenth century; in it Butler uses a searching analysis of human nature as the foundation of an ethical theory that propounds that virtue consists in following nature, while vice is deviation from nature." (DNB).
