brown morocco, with raised bands and gilt lettering to
spine. Fine gilt bamboo design to top right of front
boards. Dentelles and top edges gilt. Marbled
endpapers. Illustrated with numerous fine engraved
plates and vignettes. Somewhat foxed. Overall a very
handsome set, complete in twelve volumes.
A splendid, complete set of this late nineteenth
century Parisian periodical. As a century of
tremendous, if bewildering, progress in the sciences
drew to a close, the arts "seul retarde un peu et
s'obstine encore à ne pas voir ces merveilleux
changements". Responding to this perceived failure, the
editors of Bambou ambitiously aimed to "publier des
oeuvres d'imagination neuves, sur des subjets
passionants et inconnus, des sujets qui nous conduiront
à travers le temps et à travers l'espace...". A
thoughtful and beautifully produced response to some of
the big issues and questions of the age.
