FROUDE, James Anthony.
History of England; from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.
FROUDE'S CLASSIC HISTORY OF ENGLAND
London: Longmans, Green, & Co., [1870].
12 vols., small 8vo (7.25 x 5 inches). Half calf with twin red and green labels. Gilt raised bands, fine gilt tooling to panels. Marbled boards, edges and endpapers. A neat owner's stamp on half-titles.
A very handsome set bound in a classic style. Published to immediate popular success, Froude's History of England firmly established him as one of the pre-eminent writers of the day and fundamentally altered the direction of Tudor studies. Although heavily criticised for its inaccuracies and anti-Papal tendencies, Froude's work was nonetheless well researched and incorporated unprecedented volumes of previously unpublished material.
