POLLOK, Robert.
Ralph Gemmell; a tale for youth. Second edition, with
a biographical memoir of the author.
POLLOK'S RALPH GEMMELL
Edinburgh, Glasgow & London: James Robertson & Co., et al?, 1828.
12mo, 5¾" tall. Superb full olive calf, red label.
Wide gilt raised bands, fine tooling to panels. Very
pretty floral gilt roll framing ornate blind centre
tool to boards. Blind dentelles. Marbled edges and
endpapers. Inscription to first blank dated 1865.
A very pretty Regency binding with fine engraved
frontispiece plate. The second of a series of three
tales by the Scottish poet Pollok, Ralph Gemmell tells
the controversial history of the Covenanters. Such
was the sensitivity surrounding the history of this
seventeenth century Scottish Presbyterian movement,
that Pollok published the title anonymously and never
acknowledged it during his lifetime.
