AN EXCEPTIONAL REGENCY BINDING
London: Ackerman, Walker and Co., et al, 1822.
2 vols., 8vo (8 1/2" tall). Full pink calf by J.
ATKINSON, Spurriergate, York. Twin chocolate labels
with attractively arched volume lettering. Gilt raised
bands, fine floral tooling to panels. Very pretty gilt
and blind floral roll, framing blind star-shaped
floral motif to both boards. Gilt dentelles, edges
marbled. Slightly sunned on spine, otherwise fine copies.
A very pretty Regency binding, illustrated with twelve
superb hand-coloured plates. This unusually fine
provincial binding is marked with the binder's ticket
on the front pastedown. Butler's Hudibras is a satire
in the form of a mock-heroic poem, which ridicules the
hypocrisy of the Presbyterians and Independents. First
published in three parts from 1663-1678, it was highly
approved by Charles II, who gave Butler £300 and later
a pension of £100 a year.
