STRUTT, Joseph.
The Chronicle of England. From The Arrival of Julius
Caesar To The End of The Saxon Heptarchy.
STRUTT'S CHRONICLE OF ENGLAND
London: Joseph Cooper, 1777.
2 vols., 4to (12 x 9 inches). Full straight grain
morocco with elaborate blind tooling to the panels,
gilt raised bands and lettering. Blind tooling to
boards. The arms of Henry Edward Bunbury (son of the
famous caricaturist, Henry William Bunbury, served as
Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from
1809-16, responsible for informing Napoleon of his
sentence of deportation to St Helena) embossed on both
boards of both volumes and on bookplate. All edges and
outer edges gilt, dentelles. Marbled boards.
Illustrated throughout with 42 engravings and maps.
Slight foxing to the prelims but internally clean with
very wide margins.
A stunning binding. The Chronicle of England is a very
ambitious work and intended to be seen as a reference
rather than a narrative history. Six volumes had been
initially projected but only the first two were
published (1777-8). Together they covered the history
of England from the Roman period to the end of the
Saxon heptarchy.
