CHAMBERS' ENCYCLOPAEDIA
London & Edinburgh: W. & R. Chambers, 1880.
10 vols., 4to (10.25 x 7.25 inches). Half calf, with twin red and green labels, gilt raised bands and tooling to panels, black cloth boards, marbled edges and endpapers. Ownership inscription dated 1882. A very handsome set.
Chambers' Encyclopaedia was based on the celebrated German Conversations-Lexicon, although with a far greater emphasis on British history and biography, as well as use of illustrative engravings and maps. This edition included revised and updated articles, which the publishers felt necessary following the completion of the first edition in 1868.
