BUTLER, Samuel.

BUTLER, Samuel.

The Poetical Works of Samuel Butler.

WORKS OF SAMUEL BUTLER
London: William Pickering, 1835.
2 vols., 12mo (6½" tall). Contemporary full green calf, with circular red and black labels. Floral gilt tooling to spine, boards framed with gilt and blind triple rules. Dentelles and all edges gilt. Bookseller's ticket. Collector's stamp to first blank.
A very unusual and eccentric binding. Seventeenth century poet and satirist, Butler is best known for his burlesque poem Hudibras, the first English satire to attack a set of ideas, rather than a personality. The poem's mocking wit was at the expense of the militant Puritanism which was prevalent in England at the time.
