WILLIAM COWPER'S POEMS
London: J. Johnson, 1808.
2 vols., 12mo (5.25 x 3.25 inches). Full green malachite calf, with red labels. Gilt bands and panels. Simple gilt and blind tooling framing boards. Blind dentelles. Marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait.
An unusual and very handsome copy of Cowper's Poems. Cowper was one of the most popular poets of his day, with highlights including the ballad John Gilpin and his highly successful poem about rural ease, The Task. Although perhaps less known today, his work remains important for its far- reaching influence on the development of a more natural style in English poetry.
