VERY SCARCE 18TH CENTURY SET OF THE BRITISH ORATORS
[BRITISH ORATORS].
The British Orators, Containing Speeches in the Parliament, on the Most Interesting Subjects. By Noblemen and Gentlemen, viz. Duke of Newcastle, John, Duke of Argyle, Duke of Devonshire, Philip, Earl of Chesterfield, Pultney, Earl of Bath, Earl of Halifax, Lord Talbot, Lord Carteret, Lord Bathurst, Lord Hardwick, Sir John Barnard, Sir William Yonge, Mr. Pitt, Mr Hume Campbell, Mr. Pelham, Mr. Vyner, Mr. Nugent &c. &c... In four volumes.
London: John Torbuck, 1766.
4 vols., 8vo (8.25 x 5 inches). Contemporary full calf, black label, raised bands, red speckled edges. Unfortunately volume 4 appears to lack the final page(s). Very occasional foxing, somewhat rubbed with slight dampstaining to upper board and spine of volume one and prelims of volume four, nonetheless an elegant eighteenth century set.
A superb copy of this very scarce work in a full calf binding. The work contains the text of parliamentary debates from 1740-4, including speeches by Duke of Newcastle, Sir William Yonge, Mr. Pitt and Mr. Hume Campbell. Intriguingly, although stating clearly on the title page that this is a four volume set, each of volumes 1-4 is labelled at the foot of some pages as volume XIX, XX, XXIII and XXIV respectively.
