The Poetical Works of William Cowper.
POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM COWPER
London: William Pickering, 1830.
3 vols., 8vo (6.5" tall). Full green crushed morocco. Gilt titles within a floral cartouche, dentelles and all edges. A large gilt Grecian lyre is framed within blind rolls on the boards.
A charming early nineteenth century binding. Cowper was one of the most popular poets of his day, with highlights including the ballad John Gilpin and his highly successful poem about rural ease, The Task. Although perhaps less known today, his work remains important for its far- reaching influence on the development of a more natural style in English poetry.
