[SCOTT, Sir Walter].
SCOTT'S WAVERLEY NOVELS IN 48 VOLUMES
[SCOTT, Sir Walter].
Waverley Novels. Waverley.
Edinburgh and London: Cadell & Company, Simpkin and Marshall, 1829.
48 vols., 12mo (6.75 x 4.25 inches). Full calf with twin olive and red labels. Gilt raised bands, pretty floral gilt tooling to panels. Red speckled edges. Fine engraved frontispiece and title-page on each volume. Prelims a little foxed. Slight loss of the surface of the leather on three volumes. This is still one of the loveliest sets of Scott we've ever seen.
A superb set of Scott's hugely influential Waverley novels, in which he is considered to have perfected the format of the historical novel. "At one blow Scott had established a new literary form; and the basic principles on which Waverley and all his subsequent novels were constructed have been disregarded only at the peril of artistic failure."
