WORKS OF WILLIAM COWPER
London: William Tegg and Co., 1854.
8vo (9½" tall). Full navy blue crushed morocco, superb early Victorian binding. Raised bands, fine gilt tooling to the panels and boards, dentelles and all edges. Neat contemporary inscription to first blank. Engraved frontispiece and half-title.
Cowper was of one the most popular poets of his day, with highlights including the ballad John Gilpin and his highly successful poem about rural ease, The Task. Although perhaps less known today, his work remains important for its far-reaching influence on the development of a more natural style in English poetry.
