WATTS' IMPROVEMENT OF THE MIND
London: C. and J. Rivington, et al..., 1825.
12mo (5.25 x 3 inches). Full navy straight grain
morocco, by HENINGTON, London. Brown label, wide gilt
raised bands, floral tooling to panels. Gilt floral
roll framing boards, gilt dentelles. Marbled edges and
endpapers. Engraved frontispiece and half-title.
Binder's ticket. Inscription to first blank dated 1829.
A very pretty copy of this popular title, on which Dr
Johnson commented in his Lives of the Poets: "Few books
have been pursued by me with greater pleasure than his
Improvement of the Mind; of which radical principles
may indeed be found in Locke's Conduct of
Understanding; but they are so expanded and ramified by
Watts, as to confer on him the merit of a work in the
highest degree useful and pleasing." The sequel to his
earlier work Logick, or the Right Use of Reason, it
addresses educational issues from an evangelical
perspective.
